The Topper Book - Setting Goals

Resource

Your short-term goals will be process based – improving tacking in light winds say or, even better, improving the entry phase of a roll tack or, even better, positioning your feet during the entry phase of a roll tack. Get it? – it’s better to be specific.

There are loads of ways of setting this out in sailing. But which process to improve on to get the most benefit? Use the below chart to help decide.

An example of how you might use the chart to achieve your short-term goals:

  • My goal: Maintain my speed when tacking in light winds
  • What I intend to do: Understand how to roll tack
  • How I’m going to do it: Read the Masterclass in The Topper Book about roll tacking and then put into practice what I have read!
  • When I intend to do it: The forecast is for light winds on Saturday. I’ll miss one of the club races and practise the technique
  • How it went: OK, but I do need to practice more. Now where did it say about the entry into a roll tack?
